Nicola Cockburn

Director, Founder and Specialist Physiotherapist

I have over 17 years of experience working in the NHS specialising in neurological and care of the elderly physiotherapy. Ranging from inpatient care, stroke rehabilitation, day hospital, co-ordinating falls classes, continence physiotherapy and running the Neurological Outpatient service at Liberton Hospital in Edinburgh.

During my maternity leave to have my third child and taking a career break, I needed a specialist operation in which the recovery was challenging. This put my life goals and worklife balance at the forefront of my mind. The challenges facing the NHS with patients requiring to be discharged as soon as they were medically stable was not allowing the time to let me provide the highest quality of rehabilitation to patients of allow them the opportunity to reach their full functional potential. Therefore I thought - I need to make a change! Its time to be brave and leave the NHS to provide physiotherapy rehabilitation to patients in their own homes to really make a difference to their quality of life and be the physiotherapist I love and dreamed to be!! And that was how HomePhysio By Nicola Ltd was born 4 years ago!!

I have never once regretted taking this daunting step and the business has grown in strength, numbers and location!!   New exciting plans still lie ahead so watch our blog and social media for updates!!

Liz Duffell

Senior Physiotherapist

I have over 30 years NHS experience working across various UK Trusts in England and latterly Scotland.

I have been privileged to have worked closely with people in both in-patient, A & E, Day Hospital and community settings and have set up, managed and developed key services to support people returning home from hospital and more importantly avoiding admission in the first place. I have managed large, multidisciplinary teams, but my passion has always been my clinical involvement  with patients.

I believe that physiotherapy has an increasingly vital role in early intervention with people to avoid the revolving door of hospital admission and delays to a return home. Prompt intervention, can in many instances, avoid longer term functional changes that debilitate and affect people both physically, mentally and emotionally.

I have extensive experience in the rehabilitation of individuals with functional changes due to disease, falls, balance and neurological conditions, fractures and orthopaedic surgery and always aim to build a meaningful therapeutic relationship with the person, assisting them to achieve their personal goals, through a tailored approach.

Outside of work, I enjoy renovating my current home, gardening and cooking/ baking for family and friends. I even teach baking via Zoom, to adults with a learning disability, which is an interesting challenge!

I look forward to meeting you and working together to improve things for you.
