Award-Winning Physiotherapy in the Scottish Borders: HomePhysio By Nicola Wins Micro Business of the Year 2026

We are incredibly proud to announce that HomePhysio By Nicola Ltd has been named Micro Business of the Year at the Scottish Borders Business Excellence Awards 2026.

For our team, this award represents far more than business growth.

It recognises five years of building a physiotherapy and rehabilitation service with our patients, our team, our values and the communities we serve across the Scottish Borders at the heart of everything we do.

And the timing couldn’t be more special.

Our Micro Business of the Year 2026 win comes as we celebrate one year since opening our specialist physiotherapy and rehabilitation clinic in Selkirk and five years of HomePhysio By Nicola.

From beginning as a small home-based physiotherapy service to becoming an award-winning physiotherapy clinic and rehabilitation team, our purpose has remained the same:

To help people move better, feel better and live better.

From a Bedroom Office and Garden Shed to an Award-Winning Physiotherapy Clinic

HomePhysio By Nicola began with a very different vision of what private physiotherapy could look like.

When our founder and Director, Nicola Cockburn, Specialist Physiotherapist, established the business, she wanted to create a service that allowed her to support someone throughout their rehabilitation journey rather than simply treating a diagnosis or individual symptom.

She wanted the freedom to be innovative and creative with rehabilitation, to look at the whole person and to help people work towards their long-term goals and the life experiences that mattered to them.

There was also an important personal reason behind starting the business.

Nicola wanted to create a career that allowed her to continue developing her passion for specialist physiotherapy while achieving a better work-life balance. She wanted to be a present mum to her three children, spend time with her husband and remain involved in life on the family farm.

So HomePhysio By Nicola began small.

An office in the bedroom.

Physiotherapy equipment stored in the garden shed.

One physiotherapist working three days per week while the children were at school.

And a very big vision for what the service could eventually become.

Five years later, HomePhysio By Nicola has grown into an award-winning physiotherapy and rehabilitation business with a team of eight, supporting people from our specialist clinic in Selkirk and in homes and communities throughout the Scottish Borders.

It has been a journey filled with excitement, challenges, learning, recruitment, innovation, self-doubt and growth.

But at the centre of it all has always been the same question:

How can we help this person achieve their full potential?

An Award-Winning Physiotherapy Clinic in Selkirk, Scottish Borders

Today, HomePhysio By Nicola provides specialist physiotherapy and rehabilitation from our accessible clinic at:

Unit 5, Tweedmill Business Park, Selkirk, Scottish Borders, TD7 5DZ

Our clinic has been designed to provide much more than a traditional physiotherapy treatment room.

It includes private treatment rooms, a large rehabilitation space and specialist equipment to support people with a wide range of physical, neurological and mobility needs.

Our rehabilitation facilities allow our team to work on strength, balance, standing, walking, mobility, transfers and functional independence.

This means we can support people at very different stages of their rehabilitation journey.

For one person, the goal may be standing safely again.

For another, it could be walking independently, climbing the stairs, getting back into the garden, returning to work, getting back onto the farm or even returning to sport.

Our facilities are important.

But the most important part of HomePhysio By Nicola will always be the people within it.

Physiotherapy That Looks at the Whole Person

Our approach to physiotherapy is individualised and holistic.

An injury, neurological condition, operation, fall or change in mobility rarely affects only one part of someone’s life.

It can affect confidence, independence, relationships, family life, work, hobbies and overall wellbeing.

That is why we don’t simply want to know:

“Where does it hurt?”

We also want to know:

“What do you want to get back to doing?”

The answer will be completely different for every person.

Someone may want to walk safely to their bathroom without assistance.

Another person might want to play with their grandchildren.

Someone may want to return to driving or work.

Another may want to get back onto their tractor, return to the golf course or play sport again.

Those real-life goals become part of rehabilitation.

Because ultimately, physiotherapy isn’t just about improving a measurement on an assessment.

It is about helping someone get back to living their life.

Treatment is tailored around the individual rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach.

Physiotherapy Home Visits Across the Scottish Borders

Although our specialist clinic is based in Selkirk, HomePhysio By Nicola began as a domiciliary physiotherapy service, and providing physiotherapy and rehabilitation in people’s own homes remains an incredibly important part of what we do.

For some people, travelling to a traditional physiotherapy clinic can be difficult because of reduced mobility, disability, neurological conditions, frailty or transport.

For others, the home is simply the best place to practise the things they actually need to do.

Getting out of bed. Managing the stairs. Walking to the bathroom. Getting outside. Accessing the garden. Moving safely around the kitchen.

Our home visits also allow us to work alongside spouses, families and carers with real-life challenges such as mobility, transfers and maintaining independence safely at home.

Our team supports patients across the Scottish Borders, including areas in and around Selkirk, Galashiels, Melrose, Earlston, Hawick, Jedburgh, Kelso, Peebles, Duns and Berwickshire, alongside surrounding towns, villages and rural communities.

Our aim is to ensure that geography, mobility or disability does not unnecessarily become a barrier to accessing specialist rehabilitation.

More Than a Physiotherapy Clinic

Winning Micro Business of the Year is incredibly special because HomePhysio By Nicola has never been built around simply increasing the number of appointments we provide.

It has been about increasing what is possible for the people we support.

Over the past five years, we have supported people following life-changing illness and injury.

We have helped people regain independence and remain safely within their own homes.

We have worked alongside spouses, families and carers.

We have supported people to return to work, hobbies, farming, community activities and sport.

And sometimes we have simply helped someone regain enough confidence to take their next step.

Our impact extends beyond individual treatment through rehabilitation and prevention classes, falls prevention, workplace wellbeing, collaboration with local professionals and organisations, and education designed to help people better understand and manage their health.

Building a Team Around Our Values

HomePhysio By Nicola has grown from one physiotherapist into a team of physiotherapists, physiotherapy assistants, massage therapists and administrative support.

As the business has grown, creating the right culture has been incredibly important.

We want people to feel valued, supported and able to contribute their ideas.

We want our team to continue learning and developing.

And we want our clinicians to have the freedom to look beyond a diagnosis and provide genuinely individualised care.

Our values of care, compassion and holistic support don’t apply only to our patients.

They also shape the organisation we are building.

Because when our team feels supported, valued and passionate about what they do, that ultimately helps us provide better care to the patients and families who trust us with their rehabilitation.

Micro Business of the Year 2026

Being named Micro Business of the Year at the Scottish Borders Business Excellence Awards 2026 is an incredible milestone in our story.

Five years ago, HomePhysio By Nicola was one person with equipment in a garden shed and an ambition to create a different kind of physiotherapy service.

Today, we have a specialist rehabilitation clinic, a team of eight and a service supporting people both in our clinic and in homes throughout the Scottish Borders.

But growth has never simply been about becoming bigger.

It has been about increasing what is possible for our patients, developing our team and making specialist rehabilitation more accessible across our local communities.

To have that journey recognised by being named Micro Business of the Year 2026 is something our whole team is incredibly proud of.

A Team Achievement

Although the award carries our business name, this achievement belongs to far more than one person.

It belongs to our team.

We are incredibly grateful to every member of the HomePhysio By Nicola team for their hard work, compassion, ideas, commitment and belief in what we are creating.

It belongs to our patients and their families, who trust us with their rehabilitation, recommend us to others and allow us to be part of some incredibly important moments in their lives.

We are grateful to the healthcare professionals, case managers, businesses, charities and community organisations who collaborate with us.

And we are incredibly grateful to our families and friends who have supported the journey behind the scenes.

As we celebrate five years in business, one year in our Selkirk clinic and becoming Micro Business of the Year 2026, it feels like a very special moment to look back at where we started.

But we are also incredibly excited about what comes next.

We are still learning.

Still developing.

Still innovating.

And still asking the same question we asked at the beginning:

How can we help people achieve their full potential?
