A Brain Injury Rehabilitation Success Story Showcasing Hope, Resilience and Person-Centred Neurological Physiotherapy
There are moments in rehabilitation that stay with you forever.
As physiotherapists, we are privileged to witness incredible milestones every day, but every so often there is a moment that reminds us why we chose this profession.
This was one of those moments.
While singing “Golden” at the top of her voice, one of our patients achieved something that many believed would never be possible. After months of specialist neurological rehabilitation, she stood and transferred using the Arjo Sara Stedy for the very first time.
It was a true golden moment.
But this story isn’t simply about standing.
It is about restoring hope, rebuilding confidence and helping someone rediscover who they are after a life-changing brain injury.
Life After a Brain Injury
When we first met this remarkable lady, life looked very different.
Following a brain injury, she was bedbound.
She experienced chronic fatigue, meaning even the smallest activities required enormous amounts of energy. Increased calf muscle tone and severe hypersensitivity throughout both feet made standing and weight bearing extremely difficult. Living with autism meant every aspect of rehabilitation had to be carefully tailored around trust, understanding and creating a safe environment where she felt comfortable.
She required a full body hoist for all transfers, significantly limiting her independence and creating barriers to accessing the community, social activities and everyday life.
To many people, these challenges might have seemed overwhelming.
We saw something different.
We saw a person with determination, passions and enormous potential.
Treating the Person, Not Just the Diagnosis
At Home Physio by Nicola, based in Selkirk in the Scottish Borders, we believe neurological rehabilitation should never focus solely on a diagnosis.
Every rehabilitation programme begins by understanding the individual.
What motivates them?
What brings them joy?
What does success look like to them?
For this patient, music was one of the answers.
Alongside specialist neurological physiotherapy techniques including movement preparation, passive stretching, tone management, desensitisation therapy and carefully paced rehabilitation around chronic fatigue, music became an important part of every session.
Singing wasn’t simply enjoyable.
It became a therapeutic tool that distracted from discomfort, reduced anxiety, increased engagement and helped movement become more natural.
Combined with trust, compassion, consistency and plenty of laughter, rehabilitation became something to look forward to.
A Golden Moment
Months of perseverance, determination and teamwork led to one unforgettable day.
While singing “Golden”, she stood and transferred using the Arjo Sara Stedy for the first time.
There were smiles.
There was laughter.
There were tears.
For many people, this might appear to be a simple transfer.
For us, it represented months of specialist clinical reasoning, collaborative goal setting and unwavering belief that recovery was still possible.
This achievement is about far more than standing.
It is the first step towards opening new opportunities through improved accessibility, greater independence and increased participation in everyday life.
Progress That Goes Beyond Mobility
Meaningful rehabilitation is measured by far more than walking distance or muscle strength. It is measured by quality of life.
Today she is:
Up in her wheelchair every day.
Enjoying gaming again with improved exercise tolerance.
Going shopping and attending festivals and community outings.
Baking and cooking regularly.
Back attending singing classes.
Rediscovering her confidence and sense of identity.
Most importantly, she is finding herself again.
