At HomePhysio By Nicola, we provide expert stroke rehabilitation in the Scottish Borders, supporting patients in their homes and in our specialist clinic. John’s story highlights how personalised, patient-centred physiotherapy can help people regain independence, even when walking feels out of reach.
From Supported Steps to Independent Walking
In our previous update, we shared John’s first major milestone, his first steps since his stroke in February 2023.
At that stage, John had progressed from requiring a Sara Stedy for transfers to standing and stepping with significant support. His first steps were achieved using a quadstick, with hands-on assistance at his trunk and left knee.
After a year of not walking, this was a huge breakthrough.
But that was only the beginning.
The Reality of Stroke Recovery
Stroke rehabilitation is rarely straightforward.
John’s journey included:
Periods of infection impacting energy and progress
Ongoing spasticity management affecting his left side
Challenges with pain and fatigue during movement
These are common barriers in post-stroke recovery, and they often slow progress.
But with consistent physiotherapy support and determination, progress continued.
The Power of Family Support and Routine
A key part of John’s success has been his strong support network.
His family have played a vital role—encouraging him, supporting his rehabilitation at home, and celebrating every milestone.
John also attends our specialist physiotherapy clinic in the Scottish Borders, where rehabilitation becomes part of his routine—not just treatment.
He works hard in sessions… and then enjoys a well-earned lunch in Galashiels with his family.
This balance is important.
Because recovery isn’t just about movement, it’s about getting back to living.
Specialist Stroke Rehabilitation in Action
At HomePhysio By Nicola, we use a combination of:
Functional rehabilitation at home
Specialist gym-based physiotherapy
Targeted strength and movement retraining
John has been using the MOTOmed Viva 2, supporting both upper and lower limb strength, improving circulation, and helping to re-establish motor pathways.
This integrated approach helps patients:
Improve mobility
Build strength and endurance
Regain confidence in movement
Increase independence at home
This Week’s Milestone: Independent Walking
This week marked a defining moment in John’s recovery.
John took his first independent steps using a forearm walker.
No hands-on support
No physical assistance
Just John’s strength, control, and determination
This represents a remarkable progression:
From requiring significant support for his first steps…
to now walking independently.
He has also achieved:
12 metres of walking with a forearm walker
A chair-to-chair transfer, improving functional independence
This is what meaningful stroke rehabilitation looks like.
Regaining Independence After Stroke
John’s progress now includes:
Working towards independent transfers
Improving mobility within his home
Beginning car and toilet transfers with support
Building endurance and reducing reliance on equipment
These milestones are key indicators of improving independence and quality of life after stroke.
Why This Story Matters
John wanted to share his recovery journey to inspire other stroke survivors.
He knows how difficult it can feel in those early stages, when progress is slow and the future feels uncertain.
But his journey shows that your true potential can be unlocked with the right support, in the right place, at the right time.
Many stroke survivors are told recovery plateaus after a certain point.
John’s story proves that progress is always possible, even months or years after a stroke.
